service-name

The name of the service to be used by the broker process.

port-number

The port number of the host; if using Progress Explorer, the port number of the NameServer.

Use Service Name (-S) to specify the service or port number to be used when connecting to a broker process or used by a broker process on the host machine. You must use this parameter when you are starting:

The system administrator must make an entry in the services file that specifies the server or broker name and port number.

When the broker spawns a server, the server inherits all of the network parameters (except the Service Name parameter) from the broker. Because there is no restriction on the number of brokers you can start, you can have multiple brokers running with different network parameters. See the "Server Group (-servergroup)" section for more information.

Table 18–9 shows how the broker, server, and remote client interpret each of their parameters when you use the -S parameter.

Table 18–9: Parameter interpretation with service name (-S)
Module
Interpretation
Broker
Parameters apply to the connections on which the broker is listening for connection requests from remote clients.
Server
Parameters apply to the connection between the server and the remote client.
Remote Client
Parameters identify the connection parameters to the broker or the server.

To run a multi-user OpenEdge session from a remote network node, use both the Host Name (-H) and Service Name (-S) parameters.
